BA (Hons) in Home Economics & Business (CR930) at MTU with ‘protected places’ pathway to the Professional Master of Education (PME) at UCC.
Munster Technological University (MTU) & University College Cork (UCC) have announced an exciting opportunity for students to become fully qualified teachers in Home Economics & Business through a unique collaboration whereby students will study at MTU for 3 years and UCC for 2 years. The programme commences in September 2021. Gaining a qualification from both universities will certainly be an appealing option for students seeking an innovative programme of third level study in the areas of Home Economics and Business.

The Department of Education & Skills (DES) and the Teaching Council have categorised the subject of Home Economics as experiencing an ongoing critical shortage of teachers. This new programme will help address this shortage, whilst also making a positive contribution to building deeper knowledge, understanding, and expertise in other key disciplinary areas for contemporary society including food education and environmental sustainability, where healthy eating and environmental responsibility pose considerable challenges for future generations. Furthermore, the collaboration is the only Home Economics initial teacher education programme in the country, which will offer Business as a very suitable second teaching subject.

Dr Noel Murray, Head of Department of Tourism & Hospitality, MTU, and Dr Brian Murphy, PME Director, School of Education, UCC will provide an overview of both programmes, followed by a ‘Questions & Answers’ session with attendees.
